Raleigh and I recently had the privilege of sitting down with Mike Brown, and his story is one I had to share with you. 

Mike was retired, healthy, and living a great life when a nurse friend saw him in a grocery store and just knew something was off. Here intuition led to a diagnosis that would have floored anyone. He had stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to his liver with 19 lesions. His oncologist gave him a 3% chance of survival. 

But here’s where Mike’s story takes a turn. Instead of going home and falling down a rabbit hole of terrifying statistics, he made a choice. He decided to Google “how to prevent stage four cancer.”

That single decision changed everything. It put him in charge of his own health journey. He became a student, a researcher, and, most importantly, his own biggest advocate. 

He didn’t reject his oncologist’s plan of chemo and radiation, but built upon it. He developed his own strategy of what he calls his “heavy hitters.” His plan involved a variety of supplements and alternative treatments he researched and believed in. He approached his diagnosis not with fear, but with a deep belief that he was going to beat it. 

And he did. Three and a half years later, Mike is cancer free. His doctors called his recovery a miracle, but it’s much more than that. Mike’s recovery is a testament to the power of an informed, proactive mindset. 

It’s a reminder that while we must trust our medical teams, we also have the power to be an active member of that team. His journey is what Cancer Crew is all about, empowerment, information, and the incredible strength of the human spirit. 

What Are Mike’s “Heavy Hitters?”

Mike’s story got us thinking about the alternative treatments many of you ask about. It can definitely be confusing, so let’s break down some of the treatments we discussed and what they could mean for you. 

1. High-Dose Vitamin D (With K1/K2): Think of Vitamin D as a regulator for your cells. Some studies suggest it helps slow cancer growth. The catch? Too much Vitamin D can cause calcium to build up in your body where it shouldn’t. That’s where Vitamin K2 comes in. It acts like a traffic cop, directing that calcium in your bones and teeth where it belongs.

2. NAC (N-acetylcysteine): NAC is a powerful antioxidant. The tricky part is that some cancer treatments, like chemo and radiation, work by creating oxidative stress to kill cancer cells. There’s a concern that taking a strong antioxidant could work against your treatment by protecting the very cells you’re trying to eliminate. There has been some research to suggest it may help with cancer prevention in high-risk groups. 

3. High-Polyphenol Olive Oil: The good stuff in olive oil is a group of compounds called polyphenols. One in particular, oleocanthal, has shown a fascinating ability in lab studies to attack a cancer cell’s recycling center, causing it to break down and the cell to die. 

4. Turkey Tail Mushroom: This isn’t about directly poisoning cancer cells. Instead, Turkey Tail is an immunomodulator which is just a fancy word for something that helps your own immune system do its job better. Studies have shown it can help boost immune cell counts, especially for patients recovering from radiation. 

5. High-Dose Vitamin C: When you take Vitamin C in a pill, your body limits how much it absorbs. But when given through an IV, blood levels can get hundreds of times higher. At these super-high levels, it acts as a pro-oxidant, creating hydrogen peroxide that can kill cancer cells. 

6. Mistletoe: Used widely in Europe as an injectable cancer therapy, mistletoe is another tool that works with your body. While the jury is still out on whether it extends survival, the evidence is strong that it can help improve your quality of life. Patients in studies report less fatigue, better sleep, and improved well being. 

The bottom line is your cancer journey is your own. When thinking about alternative treatments, always do your research and speak to people you trust like a friend or physician.
